After all, osteoarthritis is osteoarthritis - no matter what joint it appears in. Osteoarthritis is by far the most common type of arthritis and osteoarthritis of knee is very common. Osteoarthritis is also referred to as degenerative joint disease and is characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and lack of mobility.

This form of arthritis primarily affects the larger weight bearing joints like the hips and knees of people past the age of 40 but osteoarthritis wrist problems and elbow problems are also quite common.

Approximately 80 percent of Americans over the age of 50 suffer from this arthritis, and approximately 20 million Americans suffer from it at any given time.

That's a whole lot of people seeking pain relief for osteoarthritis of knee and osteoarthritis wrist symptoms. You certainly are not alone if you are looking for arthritis natural pain relief.

Weight is a leading factor in osteoarthritis of knee. An overweight individual has a 30 percent higher probability of developing osteoarthritis than their slimmer counterpart. When an overweight person runs or jumps, the pressure on the joints can be as much as ten times the person's body weight. To put this into perspective, a two hundred pound individual jumping off a high curb puts approximately a ton, that's right - 2000 pounds - of stress on their joints!

A number of published studies suggest that these may also be genetic factors involved in osteoarthritis. One group of researchers compared over 100 sets of identical twins with more than 100 sets of fraternal twins. They found that OA was far more common in both identical twins than in both fraternal twins.

In another study, over 300 families where osteoarthritis was present in the adults were evaluated. The scientists discovered that the children in these families also had about a 40 percent chance of developing the disease. The researchers hypothesized that a recessive gene was involved in the transmission of osteoarthritis from one generation to another.

Overuse and joint trauma or injury are also primary culprits in the development of osteoarthritis. Researchers  found that people whose work involved at least a half hour per day kneeling or squatting, or climbing over ten flights of stairs, were more than two and a half times more likely to develop osteoarthritis of knee symptoms than people who did not engage in such activity on a regular basis.

Overuse and joint trauma or injury are also primary culprits in the development of osteoarthritis wrist symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis is another common cause of wrist arthritis.
